So What Makes A Hybrid Car A Hybrid Car?

A Hybrid Vehicle is in fact any vehicle that employs two sources of power - Usually electricity and a gas powered or diesel powered engine.

The Hybrid Vehicles of today offer up to 30 more miles per gallon than conventional gas only powered vehicles. They also produce fewer emissions and are just as safe as any gas-powered car on the market, not to mention they never need to be plugged in for recharging. The use of Hybrid Vehicles could reduce "Greenhouse Gas" by up to 1/3 as well as stop our dependence on foreign oil.

Hybrid Cars offer greater benefits than normal gas powered cars because they operate differently.

A gas powered car - produces energy by heating (burning gas) in the combustion chamber of the motor thus producing the energy needed to move the transmission and power train.

An electric vehicle uses batteries to store the energy collected from an energy source releasing the powered to an electric motor, which drives the wheels

A Hybrid Vehicle is much different depending on the manufacturer - The three most common configurations are:

Series Configuration - This simply means that the engine never directly powers the car the engine powers a generator. The generator can either power the car or charge the batteries.

Parallel Configuration - In this configuration the engine connects directly to the transmission, as well as the batteries and generator. Both the engine and generator/motor supply power to the drive train, switching back and forth as driving conditions change.

Split Configuration - With this configuration one axle is driven by the engine and the other is driven by the electric motor.

Hybrid Vehicles offer many great benefits. The major one being the deliverance from our addiction to foreign oil. You can get a tax break on your federal taxes buy getting a hybrid vehicle too. Check with your dealer.
